Do I need a special permit to visit Sikkim?

Yes. Indian nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit restricted areas like Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, Lachen, and Lachung. Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Sikkim, which can be acquired at border checkpoints easily, along with restricted area permits via verified tour operators.

Sikkim is widely recognized as one of the safest states in India for tourists. Local residents are exceptionally warm, helpful, and respectful. Standard safety precautions should still be observed, particularly when driving late at night through high altitude mountain passes.

Local travel inside Sikkim is dominated by shared and private SUVs (Tata Sumo, Mahindra Bolero, Innova). This is due to safety, licensing regulations, and difficult terrains. Self-drive cars from outside the state are not permitted in most high-altitude sightseeing areas, meaning hiring a local driver is highly recommended.
